School punishes blind child by taking away cane and replacing it with a pool noodle

Parents are outraged after they say an elementary school punished their blind child by replacing his cane with a pool noodle.
Dakota Nafzinger attends Gracemor Elementary School in Kansas City.  The 8-year-old was born without eyes — something in the medical world known as Bilateral Anopthalmia.
School District Spokeswoman Michelle Cronk tells FOX 4 in Kansas City that Dakota hit somebody with his cane on while riding the bus. She says they took away his cane and gave him a pool noodle because he needed something to hold. Cronk said Dakota fidgets without his cane.
Dakota’s father, Donald Nafzinger, said his son lifts his cane sometimes and the bus driver thought he was using it violently.
“They said they were going to give me this for the next two weeks,” Dakota said.
Dakota’s family claims the cane was taken as a way of “humiliating” him for misbehaving.

  1. That is the most horrid thing I could ever dream of doing to a blind child. That school needs to be sued and sued big time for this out and out torture they put this child through. Who's brilliant idea was this? Or should I say who is the sadist who dreamed up this horrid thing to do? That person needs to have their eyes put out for 2 weeks and given a noodle and see how far they get........appalling to say the least.

  2. If the kid was actually using it as a weapon then it was appropriate to take it away, if just for a while.

  3. The purpose of a cane for someone blind is to use it as an extension of their hand and feel out obstacles. If a kid hit someone with his cane, I don't see why it's unreasonable to replace it with a boffer: if he hits someone with it, he won't hurt them, and he can still use it to feel things out. The student who was assaulted by the kid hitting him with his cane also has a right to be safe on the school bus. This sounds like a wise response. The alternative is to suspend him from school for assaulting someone.

  4. And if your kid was hit on the school bus by a kid with a cane, what would you say then? I think you haven't thought this out.

  5. I haven't considered the possibility of blind kids running around torturing seeing children who were helpless to avoid a blind kid.

What I have considered is that kids like to pick on disabled children and make fun of them and unless it was done by accident, I'd say more often than not a kid that gets hit deserved it.

  6. "More often than not a kid who gets hit deserved it." Are you serious? So, these kids that like to pick on disabled children, if they hit them, then the disabled children deserved it? I truly believe you are not thinking these things out.

You are also assuming that the blind kid with the cane is a good guy. Just because a kid is disabled doesn't mean he isn't capable of hitting someone for no reason other than that he can get away with it, as bullies do. I still don't see how it is outrageous to take a cane away from a kid who has hit someone with it, and replaced it with a cane made of foam that can't harm anyone. It seems like a thoughtful and reasonable response in a difficult situation.

  7. I guess I have to draw you a picture for you to understand... if it's possible at all. Any sane person knows I wasn't talking about bully's hitting people, I was talking about a blind kid hitting people. If some one is bullying a blind kid then I can't blame them for swinging their cane at them. They certainly are no threat to any sighted person who could walk away. Just think for a minute, how close does a sighted person have to be in order to get hit by a blind kid? is it even possible for a blind kid to chase after a sighted kid to torment him? It's pretty obvious to anyone with an ounce of brains that the kids were torturing the blind kid, probably taunting him to hit them. I've seen how kids treat handicapped children and it's horrible, no human should have to live through that and in this case the solution is so obvious, just tell the kids to stay away from him and they can't get hit.
