Breast cancer: Causes, symptoms and treatment

Breast cancer is a malignant growth that begins in the tissues of the breast. Breast cancer mostly common in women, but it can also originate in men.

There is however no exact cause of breast cancer, but myths in this case is more widespread than the real cause.

Some of the causes that have been collectively associated with breast cancer are:

Age: Age plays an important role for chances of getting breast cancer, as the person gets older the chances of it are more.

Inheritance: Family history like that of mother, sister and daughter who has been diagnosed with breast cancer further accelerates the risk factor.

Early menses or menopause: Early start onset of menses and early menopause can also be a reason associated with breast cancer.

Symptoms:

A change in size or shape of the mature breast: If there is a change in the size or shape of a mature breast, it may signal swelling within the milk ducts of the breast.

Change in size or shape of the nipple: Body weight changes or other natural changes that come with age do affect the size and shape of the nipples. But, if a nipple retracts and does not come back to its normal shape, check with a doctor immediately.

Changes of color, shape or texture of the nipple or the areola: If the skin of the nipple or the areola has some dimples, puckers or a rash and the symptoms continue, check with your doctor.

Pain in the breast: It is important to know your cyclical pains and keep a check if the pain occurs in tune with the monthly period and in both breasts. But if the pain occurs only in one breast and that too off-cycle, consult a doctor.

Treatment:

Mostly women with breast cancer go in for surgery. Surgery is often combined with other treatments such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and/or monoclonal antibody therapy.
